Seeking to hone her craft, historical romance novelist Deeanne Gist commissioned the reproduction of true Victorian era garb and came to a stunning realization: Dressing and undressing in the 19th century was not easy, it could not be done alone, and it certainly did not bode well for the quick seductions many historical novelists have penned.
While it may be a guilty pleasure for some, the historical category accounts for almost a quarter of the reported $1.4 billion romance novel industry. So it is no surprise that Ms. Gist’s newly acquired insight earned her a workshop at the annual convention of Romance Writers of America. In an hour long demonstration to fellow writers, Ms. Gist took on the challenge of donning 12 layers of Victorian garments that were typically worn by a lady in the 1800′s including bloomers, a corset, a chemise, stockings, petticoats and more.
