The photos are certainty eye-catching–a surreal form of artistic expression, especially with stiff mannequin-like models juxtaposed against a plain backdrop with obscure objects.

Come on, it’s advertising—intended to draw your eye and keep it there. The more edgy the advert is, the more attention it gets. But ads also communicate a mood and underlying message about the retailer’s target customers–their lifestyle, desires and dreams. Can you see past the unusual intimate tone of the images to see the clean lines of the lingerie design? If you looked away right now, could describe what they’re wearing?

Perhaps the images themselves are not the issue as much as knowing that the models are mother and daughter and not just two caring women. While lingerie clearly serves a function and the primers of intimate apparel are commonly taught to us by our moms, it often suggests intimacy. Sex sells, especially for this type of product, but apparently our thoughts aren’t supposed to go there. In an interview, company president Maayan Zilberman was cited saying “we’re surprised that people are reacting with such violently, negative connotations such as incest, given that we were only making light of a healthy and beautiful relationship between two women…something we think people in our culture are often uncomfortable with, especially when there is so much focus on competition and gossip.”

Overall, this may not have been the best medium to sell the beauty of maternal relationships, but rather female relationships. It would likely appeal to men, maybe not to all woman. Ultimately, lingerie designers are the business to sell their products and build their name. In this instance, hype sells. They succeeded in getting noticed, and hopefully will sell more products. If Ryanair reaches their €100K fund-raising goal, they will have raised half a million Euros from the Ryanair Cabin Crew Calendar sales for charities since 2008.
