As young girls, many of us imagined how we would look and be when we grew up. In truth, however, when it came to our physical attributes we would not have fathomed that our budding beauties would be less than perfect in either their size or shape. Time passes and eventually reality sets in. Our new task as adults is then finding the best bra and lingerie to fill in the gaps and make us feel wonderful about our physical selves.

If you fall into this camp – one breast not being of equal size as the other – you have options. For modest differences, you can try contour or molded-cup bras as they create a more symmetrical, rounded silhouette. Also known as t-shirts bras, they boast a smooth finish, are great under form-fitting tops or dresses and are available in traditional molded cup bra, convertible contour cup bra and strapless bra styles. For more noticeable differences, you can try push up bras or padded bras with removable foam cookies. Cookies, also known as inserts, are also sold separately in pairs, are made of either foam or silicone and can be placed selectively in most bra styles to fill in any gaps in the cup.

I’m often asked: what is the most common mistake women buy when fitting or buying bras? While there are many common mistakes, ranging from the way women wash their bras to the way women adjust their straps, I have to say that the part of bra-wearing that is most often misunderstood is cup size and band size.

I see this particularly with fuller-figured women who are shopping for plus-size bras. Because many lingerie companies stop producing bras at a D or DD + cup size, women with full figures buy a bigger band size to compensate for a cup size that is too small.

A true fit for a bra accommodates bust size in the cup and torso width, below the bust, in the band. A bra that fits well will have a snug (but not too tight) band against the ribcage below the bust. This band will provide support that prevents sagging, strap stretching and a poorly shaped bust.

When women opt for a bigger band size in lieu of the proper cup size, they lose much of the support that is important for a properly supported and shaped figure. The right way to choose a bra size is to purchase the properly sized cup and the properly sized band. Although these cup sizes will not be available at all lingerie stores, there are some boutiques, particularly online, that can provide the same lacy, sexy plus size bras in whatever size fits best.

Finding plus-size lingerie that fits at all is difficult, and finding plus-sized lingerie that fits well is almost impossible. Here are some tips to find out if the bra you’re wearing right now is worth wearing at all.

• Comfort
  How does your body feel at the end of the day? Are you dying to take your bra off every evening? A good bra is comfortable. In fact, because of the support it offers, a good bra will often be more comfortable than no bra. If you feel like your bra is poking, pulling or pinching, you should keep looking. It could be any number of factors—the size, fabric, cut, shape, etc—but if something isn’t right, you can do better.

• Size
  It’s very common for women to consistently by the wrong size bra. How? Most women buy a bigger back size and smaller cup size than what they really wear. If you can see the outline of your bra or if your bust line looks misshapen or “squashed” under a t-shirt, your bra is probably the wrong size. Try buying the next size larger cup and a size or two smaller back size measurement. This will probably give you a better fit.

• Support
  One frustrating issue that many plus-sized woman face is finding adequate and comfortable support. Looking for bras with underwires and strategic layers of mesh, stretch and cotton fabrics will give you a good start. Finding the right size for your bra is also a good way to ensure that it will be able to adequately support you throughout the day.

• Confidence
  While fun colors, designs and details aren’t necessary on a practical level, who doesn’t want to feel good about their body? Buying a few different types of bras is a great way to build your confidence and help any outfit look even better. Look for colors that will layer well with your favorite outfits and a variety of fun details such as lace trim, bows, ribbon and fabrics. Find a bra you actually like… you’ll be much more excited to wear it.
