I’m often asked: what is the most common mistake women buy when fitting or buying bras? While there are many common mistakes, ranging from the way women wash their bras to the way women adjust their straps, I have to say that the part of bra-wearing that is most often misunderstood is cup size and band size.

I see this particularly with fuller-figured women who are shopping for plus-size bras. Because many lingerie companies stop producing bras at a D or DD + cup size, women with full figures buy a bigger band size to compensate for a cup size that is too small.

A true fit for a bra accommodates bust size in the cup and torso width, below the bust, in the band. A bra that fits well will have a snug (but not too tight) band against the ribcage below the bust. This band will provide support that prevents sagging, strap stretching and a poorly shaped bust.

When women opt for a bigger band size in lieu of the proper cup size, they lose much of the support that is important for a properly supported and shaped figure. The right way to choose a bra size is to purchase the properly sized cup and the properly sized band. Although these cup sizes will not be available at all lingerie stores, there are some boutiques, particularly online, that can provide the same lacy, sexy plus size bras in whatever size fits best.

• Invest in some pretty fabric bags (choose soft, breathable fabrics such as linen, cotton or satin) to store your lingerie in. These are good at home, or to reduce wrinkle and crumpling on the road.
• Tissue paper can be useful to fill out bra and bustier cups or to reduce wrinkles when added as a layer into folded slips.
• If you don’t have fabric bags and are unable to attain some before your trip, wrap your undergarments in other articles of clothing. The delicate fabrics on lingerie easily snag on other items in your suitcase and can get caught in suitcase zippers. Wrapping them loosely in a shirt can help prevent damage.
• Pack your delicates away from bottles of liquid, items that might be thrown back in your suitcase hot (such as travel irons, curling irons, etc) and anything with Velcro on it. The contents of your suitcase will likely shift as you travel, and your favorite lingerie can easily be ruined by an accidental bump-in with the wrong item!
